Theme for the Month: Kindness and positivity

‘Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.’

Dalai Lama

This week marks Safer Internet Day and we have been discussing how we can make the internet a better and safer place. We have discussed the importance of permission, how to have respect and ensure we are kind when we are online. The same can also be true in our everyday real lives. We want to throw kindness around like confetti and that means being positive about others as well as ourselves.

Safer Internet Day

We celebrated the global Safer Internet Day on 5th February with each class taking part in some very important activities. We have learnt about the importance of making the internet a better place by being a good friend online, by being kind and supportive and also by knowing what to do if something makes us uncomfortable. We know there is a button we can click to report something negative or harmful. We discussed the importance of permission and about not giving away personal information. We would also encourage you as parents/carers to be very mindful of what children have access to whilst online. There is no denying that the internet can be a wonderful and positive resource however it is so important to keep ourselves safe whilst online. As a school, we continually revisit these messages, so we encourage parents and carers to do the same. We would also encourage a screen free zone in children’s bedrooms and ensure children have stopped screen time for an hour before bed. Blue screen effect can seriously disrupt sleep and can have a negative impact on children’s performance at school.

Shared Education

It has been a busy half term for Shared Education. The teachers from the three school met to plan and prepare for the Term 2 pupil meets. We have hosted the P1/2 and P3/4 classes from our partner schools this term. P5/6/7 are excited for their upcoming trip to Carnalbanagh for lots of STEM fun. Teachers have also had the opportunity to continue their professional development through a variety of courses and are excited to put all they are learning into practice in the classrooms.

500 Words Competition

This week we took part in a live lesson hosted on BBC for the annual 500 Words competition. This lesson was to inspire us to create and record our amazing ideas for our entries. We had great fun thinking up some story sparks, an awesome opening line, a truly awful villain and were delighted when David Walliams appeared to read the 500 words written by Frank Cottrell-Boyce. We are buzzing with lots of ideas for our own 500 words story. Remember, spelling, handwriting, grammar are not as important as getting those great ideas flowing! Closing date for entries is Fri 8th March so anyone wishing to submit an entry needs to have it to Miss Mulholland by that date. Get writing!

We have lots to celebrate this month. A massive well done to all boys and girls who received transfer results this month. You should be so proud of all your hard work. We wish all our Primary 7 pupils well as they begin the journey into their next phase of education.

Well done to our Power Four who represented Carnlough CIPS at the annual Credit Union quiz in Larne.

We celebrate all our achievements and learn from our similarities and differences. This is one of the reasons our school and our Carnlough CIPS family is so special!

After School Provision

Term 2 afterschools clubs are proving to be a big hit. We are delighted to offer such a wide programme and love seeing our pupils continue to develop their skills, talents and abilities in afterschool clubs. A big thank you to Jimmy for his help with Eco-club. The children are very excited about their litter pick and their aim to keep Carnlough tidy! There are some great ongoing projects in Art Attack and we are guaranteed to hear lots of giggles coming from Film Club. Musical Monkeys with Lorraine begins on 8th Feb for P1-3 (2pm-3pm).
